Frank Grillo has been in everything. From big screen blockbusters like Captain America: Winter Soldier and Purge: Anarchy to hit television shows like Tulsa King, he’s been in a lot. Seriously, go look at his Wikipedia – the man has worked for a long time! And we love every single project. And, we loved getting an opportunity to speak to him. In a new interview, exclusively on GVN; our colleague KJ got to speak to Grillo about his upcoming film Werewolves.
Below is the transcript of that interview, which was part of a press junket for Werewolves:
KJ: So let’s talk. New project, Werewolves, is going to be out in theaters December 6th. And you know, Frank, when I started watching it, because I’m a sci-fi fan, I’m a superhero fan, I’ve seen a werewolf movie or show in my day. I was fascinated with the premise and I kind of wanted to go back and I’m curious, you know, for you, when you got the script and it was sort of this supermoon pandemic, did it also strike you as like, hey, this is a great new take on werewolves?
FRANK: Yeah, that was it. You know, I’ve never seen a, you know, a movie like this with werewolves, you know, where it was a pandemic, where it was multiple werewolves and I found it to be original right off the bat and I got to tell you nowadays and at my age you know, I’m trying to find original things to do, especially genre things. And this, I thought, was a fresh take on it. I thought the practical wolves were going to be fantastic. You know, I’ve seen enough CGI. I mean, I’m up to here in CGI. And the script was really tight. It was really great. It had a lot of heart. And so it was kind of a no-brainer for me. I was excited to do it. I had a blast making the movie.
KJ: Did you know going into it that it was going to be such an incredible cast around you?
FRANK: I didn’t. I know they had cast me and then I heard Lou Diamond Phillips’ name and then Ilfenesh. who I wasn’t terribly familiar with, Katrina Law. But when they put all these actors together, I mean, it was a real powerful team of people. And when I saw the film, I was just not amazed, but I was just pleasantly surprised by how wonderful it all came together. I had no idea about this movie in post. I just made it and I left. And I said, you guys have a Herculean task at hand to make these wolves look real and to put all of us together and we don’t look silly. And when I screamed it at my house, I was blown away. I called Stephen, the director, immediately. And I said, I don’t know how you did this, but you’re amazing.
KJ: Oh, it’s such an incredibly intense feel. I mean, as soon as it kicks off, you’re just like, I can’t stop watching this, right? You are, you’re just totally in it. Did you feel that way when you were making it or did you feel like there’s gonna be some work to do?
FRANK: No, there was that element of that feeling because we shot it sequentially, you know, as the script reads. And so you’re kind of caught up in that, you know, moment to moment thing. You’re not having to go from… I’ve done movies where I’ve started at the end and worked my way back. And it’s really difficult. This was fun because we shot it sequentially and I think it really lent itself to the final product of the film.
KJ: I have to ask before I let you go, because you know, with all of this going on and my superhero love, that transition over to D.C., do you have any teases for us with Superman coming out in your role now in the D.C. universe?
FRANK: Well, I have to tell you, my transition has been amazing. I love having been transitioned. And I saw recently James Gunn was showing us a little clip of the trailer of Superman, and I mean, people are gonna be blown away. I think they’re expecting big things from James Gunn, but it was fun being a part of it. I’m in that, and I’m in Peacemaker and Creature Commandos as Rick Flag Senior, so I get to kind of cross through the whole worlds, and it’s been a blast.
