From the GVN Files: Who are the Eternals?

During our search through the GVN files, we have talked about characters that have either been rumored or placed on a wish list by fans who hope to see these characters in either the DCEU or the MCU. But let’s talk about a group that is pretty much set to join the MCU as part of its next phase of Marvel’s Master plan. Let’s discuss a bit of history with the Eternals.

The Eternals were created by Jack Kirby and they first appeared in Eternals Issue#1 which was released in July of 1976. The origins of the Eternals starts with the Celestials. As Kirby fashioned the story, the Celestials had visited Earth over five million years ago. In the grand scheme of things, they were genetic scientists. They plied their skill on early “prototype-humans” and created two completely divergent races. The almost immortal Eternals and the race of genetically unstable beings known as the Deviants. Their experiments lead to the future possibilities of super-powered mutations in humans. With their experiments showing promise, Eatth was not the only planet they decided to ply their trade.  They also paid visits to the Kree and Skrull homeworlds and found similar results with their activities.

As for the Eternals, they were generally human in appearance and they made it their task to protect humans, especially from the Deviants while keeping their existence quiet. Eventually however, with the Eternal’s powers and the advanced technology they had developed, there began a conflict amongst them about whether they should be conquering other races instead of protecting them. This became a civil war between the factions for and against the idea. The faction against was lead by Kronos and the one for aggression was lead by his brother Uranos. Ultimately, Kronos side prevailed and Uranus and his defeated followers left Earth and settled on Uranus where they built a colony.

In time, some of Uranos group attempted to return to Earth and resume hostilities. Before they could get there, they were attacked by a passing Kree ship. In the conflict they were forced to land on Saturn’s moon Titan. They built a colony there but one of their group was captured by the Kree. With the samples they gained from him in their experiments, they felt empowered enough to perform some genetic experiments on humans which resulted in the Inhumans.

The group lead by Kronos had established a city called Titanos. While Kronos was working on experiments in Cosmic energy, something went wrong with catastrophic results for the city as it was destroyed. The resulting energy left Kronos in an immaterial state, but it activated some latent genes in the Eternals.  They found that they could now channel that same cosmic energy through themselves. That along with their long lifespan made them near god-like. However, with Kronos no longer able to rule, a new leader had to be chosen. This was the first time that the Eternals used their powers to merge into a single being, the Uni-Mind, so they could decide who should rule berween Kronos two sons, Zuras or A’lars. The Uni-Mind chose Zuras so A’lars chose to leave Earth rather than to possibly cause another civil war. He journeyed to Titan, and upon his arrival, he found the Colony reduced to only one member, a woman named Sui-San. In time A’lars fell in love with Sui-San and overtime, they repopulated Titan. The mix of cosmic activated genes from A’lars and the inactivated ones from Sui-San created a race of Titanium Eternals. While not as powerful and immortal as the Terran based Eternals, they are still more powerful than the pre-civil war Titanium Eternals. This is where Thanos, one of the last sons of A’lars and Sui-San –  he who is called the Mad Titan, came from. You might have heard of him. HIS tale is a bloody one that spans universes. Let’s just say he had “Mother” issues…and a love of Death…Literally.

This is just a start of the varied and intricate history of the Eternals. When your characters are basically immortal, there is a lot of ground to cover. Just in this short exposition, we see connections to the Kree, the Skrulls, The Inhumans, and Thanos. We haven’t touched the tales of Ikaris, Sersi, Thena and the Neil Gaiman retcon or the interactions between the Eternals, Thor and the Avengers in the past. It is small wonder that Kevin Feige and the Marvel brain trust have chosen the Eternals as a new vehicle to carry the MCU into the next phase. The Celestials alone are an untapped source for numerous storylines.

Are you excited to see the story of the Eternals brought to the big screen with the power of Marvel films behind it? Casting ideas have already been discussed with Angelina Jolie’s name recently mentioned for a major role, with the character of Sersi most prominently attached. Once Avengers: End Game has hit the theaters on April 26th, you can bet you will be hearing more about the Eternals. Count on GVNation to lead you every step of the way.
