Full 2021 Oscar Nominations Are In… Riz Ahmed, Steven Yeun, Chloe Zhao Make History

Nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards were finally announced after being delayed because of COVID. Men and women seemed to have fared well this year, with seventy women receiving a total of 76 nominations. This marks a record for a given year according to the Academy.

Making history are two women, Chloé Zhao and Emerald Fennell who were nominated in the directing category in the same year for the first time. Zhao is the first woman of color to be nominated in the category.

Netflix’s black and white drama ” Mank” about screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz’s making of the screenplay for the legendary film “Citizen Kane,” is in the lead with 10 nominations.
Diversity in awards is the big topic this year and finally, we are seeing some. In the best supporting actor, category Three Black men, Leslie Odom Jr. for “One Night in Miami” and Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield for “Judas and the Black Messiah” all received nods.

Netflix is once again in the lead with 35 nominations. Last year receiving 24 nods, but only walking away with just two wins. This year, the streaming service has three films in the running for best picture: the home-grown “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” “Mank,” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”. Amazon Studios has “Sound of Metal”, “One Night in Miami” in several categories, along with “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” in the adapted screenplay and supporting actress (Maria Bakalova) categories.

The Oscars ceremony, which was pushed back two months because of the pandemic, will be held on April 25.
