Full List of Critics Choice Award Nominations Released

The nominations for awards just keep rolling in. Last week we had Golden Globes, then the SAG nominations. Who’s racking up the most nominations? Looks like Netflix. Today’s Critics Choice Awards scored them 46 nods! Mank by David Fincher received nominations in 12 categories. While Mank in is the lead for nods, Minari, the Korean American Family starting over in Arkansas is right behind with 10 nods.  Lastly, but in no way least is Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom received 8 nominations. Joining them is the film News Of The World by Universal Studio’s starring Tom Hanks respectively getting 7 nominations.

Critics Choice & Oscars

The Critics Choice Awards is usually a good judge as to which way Oscar may lean. There were 10 entries including the above-aforementioned four, plus two more Netflix Films snub by the Globes including Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods, which corralled 6 nominations. In addition, Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial Of The Chicago 7   seized 6 nods. Other’s up for Best Picture are Focus Features’ Promising Young Woman, Amazon Studio’s One Night In Miami,  and Search Light’s Nomadland, each also snatched six nominations individually. Amazon’s Sound Of Metal is right behind with 5 nominations.

Strongest Contenders

Landing key Directing, Screenwriting, and Acting mentions were a few from the Best Picture nominees, Minari, Promising Young Woman, Mank, One Night In Miami, The Trial Of The Chicago 7, and Nomadland.  They are the strongest contenders in the group.

Oscar Contenders

Mank’s recent gush of nods from the Globes, where it is in the lead for nominations, is gaining traction. It also now seems to be the Critics Choice favorite. Look for the film to lock in Oscar nomination when they are announced on March 15. Fincher’s beautiful black and white look at Hollywood is a shoo-in. We all know Hollywood loves a film about themselves. A24’s Minari brought in an impressive amount of  SAG and Critics Choice nominations. It seems to be gaining strength as an Oscar contender. Personally, I like an underdog story and the Oscars tend to lean that way too sometimes.

The Men Bringing It On!

Packing in the nominations is the men’s  Best Actor category with 8 men grabbing nods. In the Best Actor category, we have News Of The World’s Tom Hanks and  The Way Back’s Ben Affleck two films that have been completely left out this season. This is a jump for them, it also another step up for the Da 5 Blood’s  film. Delroy Lindo snubbed in the category by the SAG and the Globes. Hopefully with the CCA  announcements this morning they will regain some forward movement. Not surprising is the late Chadwick Boseman receiving four nominations from CCA for his performances in Da 5 Bloods and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, including 2 nods in Acting Ensemble. Boseman’s speed is unremarkable with the CCA nods matching his SAG nods.

“What a year it has been for film! We are honored to have the opportunity to recognize the tireless work of so many who overcame unprecedented obstacles to deliver these beautiful, challenging, nuanced pieces of art to our screens,” said Critics Choice Association CEO Joey Berlin. “The stories told by this year’s nominees will continue to resonate and we congratulate each and every one of them for their extraordinary accomplishments.

Airing

Just like all the other award shows The Critics Choice Awards will be a live virtual/hybrid ceremony thanks to COVID. It will broadcast on The CW on Sunday, March 7, 2021.  Full details have not yet been announced on what the show will look like. Included in the ceremony will be Motion Pictures and Television achievements. TV Nominees were previously announced on January 18.  Netflix leads in both film and television nominations with a total of 72 possible wins. Go Netflix! HBO/HBO Max scored 24 series nominations and Amazon Studios expanded with a total of 18 for their film additions.  See the full list of today’s Film nominations below. Share your thought and picks.
