Back in 2020, Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Rogue One) decided he would tackle The Creator, a dystopian world where humankind faces a collective enemy — A.I. Sound familiar, anyone?
In a Nostradamian effort where art imitates life, the global force of artificial intelligence has proved diabolical and fully intuitive to know humans need to be exterminated. Ergo, humans fight back. While this may seem eerily similar to previous films like The Terminator, Elysium, and District 9, the attack of these mammoth machines and clone armies also resemble…say, Rogue One.
With all those ingredients, this looks like a sci-fi smorgasbord of awesome!
The official synopsis for The Creator from 20th Century Studios reads:
Amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua (Washington), a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife (Chan), is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war… and mankind itself.
Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory… only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child.
The galaxy is after a young being who may carry the riddles of the universe. Rogue One. The Mandalorian. Whatever the influence, this cast and that trailer are a refreshing and riveting take on the entire post-apocalyptic genre!
The Creator features John David Washington (Tenet, BlacKkKlansman) and Gemma Chan (Eternals, Humans), along with Ken Watanabe (Batman Begins, Inception), Allison Janney (The West Wing, Juno), and Sturgill Simpson (Dog, The Hunt, and all his great music). The shining light of the trailer is “the child” of AI, Madeleine Yuna Voyles.
For the cinephiles, this is an all-star cast behind the scenes as well.
Gareth Edwards is not only director but co-writer of the screenplay with Chris Weitz (About A Boy, Pinocchio). The two already have superb chemistry because they collaborated on Rogue One. The magic continues with a couple of other producer friends: Kiri Hart, Jim Spencer, and Arnon Milchan. If you like the score, that’s the maestro of the geek Michael Giacchino. And the cinematography is from Oscar-winning ingenue Greig Fraser.
The film explodes in theaters on September 29.
Since he saw ‘Dune’ in the $1 movie theater as a kid, this guy has been a lover of geek culture. It wasn’t until he became a professional copywriter, ghostwriter, and speechwriter that he began to write about it (a lot).
From the gravitas of the Sith, the genius of Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, or the gluttony of today’s comic fan, SPW digs intelligent debate about entertainment. He’s also addicted to listicles, storytelling, useless trivia, and the Oxford comma. And, he prefers his puns intended.
