For those of you with some age, you might remember George Carlin’s comedy bit about the seven bad words you couldn’t say on television. Apparently, when it came to the Arrowverse, Gotham was one of the words they were not allowed to use or even visit. With the tonight’s Arrow, the ban has finally been lifted and they will get to present their depiction of Gotham. This represents a long hoped for possibility.

Caroline Dries, who wrote Part 2 of the “Elseworlds” crossover event with Arrow EP Marc Guggenheim, used to work on Smallville. While at a recent press event, Dries explained DC’s take on the subject of Gotham at that time.

DC doesn’t let you say Batman or have anything about Gotham — like it’s just off-limits.

Now with Fox’s Gotham completing its fifth and final season, the reins have been loosened up a little and the Arrowverse can now go to the forbidden land known as Gotham, although you still won’t see Batman. Baby steps, baby steps. The show has also made it a point to make their version of Gotham distinctly different from Fox’s version. Dries described the look they were trying to achieve.

Compared to the worlds that Arrow, The Flash and Supergirl live in, the Gotham we see on Monday night has “a darker vibe,” Dries said. “We were trying to create, with music and the exteriors and the alleys and the grime, a sort of uncomfortable city.
