After 15 seasons and a not-so-greatly received series finale, I’m sure Supernatural fans have sort of forgotten about season ten. As someone who actually stopped watching the show after eleven seasons, I look back at what made me stop watching the show. There’s other supernatural fans who recall when they fell off. Maybe they felt season five was the canonical ending. Maybe it was after Bobby died the first time. Whatever reason it is, not every Supernatural fan made it to the end.
For me, the beginning of the end for me was season ten. Even though I watched through season eleven, it was the whole Demon Dean thing that rubbed me the wrong way. Now, let me explain. Throughout the whole Supernatural seasons (up to that point), Sam had been possessed by demons and angels alike. Dean was always Dean. There was a small teasing of Dean becoming a demon, but it never happened. That was until season ten when we had Demon Dean for literally three episodes.
And they were glorious episodes. They showed a huge range for Dean and even though we all knew Jensen Ackles could act, I think he did some of his best work as Dean when he was…a demon. You could tell Ackles was having fun with this role. It was Dean without any inhibitions. It was just fun to watch. I’m not saying to have Dean as a demon forever, but it could have been longer than three episodes. The show teased this to death and for it only to be three episodes was a little disappointing.
For my Supernatural fans, remember season six? Soulless Sam? It was great seeing Jared Padalecki play a different version of his character. And Soulless Sam was great to watch albeit he was a bit of a dick. Still, Soulless Sam lasted for longer than the three episodes we were given with Demon Dean. It’s one of the things that really started bothering me about supernatural – for some reason, they were okay with killing off all of these side characters. But, they seemingly were afraid to take risks with their main two. If only they could have understood how well-received Demon Dean was amongst fans.
Still, Demon Dean shows me that we are really in for a treat when Ackles plays Soldier Boy in Amazon Prime’s The Boys. Soldier Boy is a villain and has been described as almost being as bad, if not worse; than Homelander. If Ackles can hone in what he did as Demon Dean, I think we’re in for a treat.
