Synopsis: Mark goes back to college, reads his dad’s books, and nothing bad happens to him or his family.
I know another round of waiting has been similar to being punched into a mountainside, but it’s almost over. And I can say with certainty that these last four episodes of the season are worth it. To quickly recap, Mark left Earth against Cecil’s stern command and ended up on Thraxa where he is reunited with his father. To his surprise, he finds out that he has a baby brother and that the Viltrum empire is en route to destroy everything in sight. After a brutal beating, Omni-Man is taken captive and Mark is left to assume the mission of taking over his home planet or face the death of everyone he loves. Now, what will he do?
“I’m still trying to figure out what kind of hero I want to be, and that’s not the kind of person you need on the Guardians.”
Just when you thought Invincible couldn’t get any better, a hand from another dimension slaps the sense back into you. Picking up right where episode 4 left off, Invincible Season 2 Part 2 is incredibly explosive and full of surprises. Prepare to constantly pick your jaw off the floor. Part 2 is filled to the brim with excitement, unexpected moments, and intense storylines. From Shapesmith struggling to keep his identity hidden, Angstrom Levi seeking revenge, and Eve finding her footing, to shocking deaths, changes come at you faster than Amanda changing into monster form. Anchored by family and motivated by duty, blood will be spilled, tons of it.
The crux of this latter half of the season is the continuation of Mark attempting to do it all. While being a superhero takes up most of his time, he still wants to be the devoted boyfriend to Amber, a decent college student, a best friend to William, a loving son, and now a big brother. Not to mention, at every physically exhausting turn, he is trying his best to avoid becoming like his father, Omni-Man whom we last saw being captured and taken from Thraxa. The emotional beats hit harder than Invincible does. What this show does amazingly well is giving just enough time and story to each character without pulling too much focus. It offers adequate time for us to witness all of the cool powers and abilities of others and the chance to invest in them as well. You get the opportunity to be fully annoyed by Rex, and the blossoming relationship between Rudy and Amanda, while also being completely intrigued by Cecil and Donald. As every storyline seamlessly begins to intertwine, the overall narrative grows exponentially. With threats from space being a constant looming threat, we spend time in each episode in the starry vacuum. It’s safe to say, Earth is in potentially more danger than ever before.
“Your family’s legacy is blood.”
The animation looks better than before and the showrunner, writers, and artists are very aware of our thoughts and feelings about the wait. One of the episodes features a hilarious meta moment that will have you paying more attention than you ever did. There are multiverse jokes and heartfelt moments, and it remains grounded even while most of many of our heroes and villains can fly. The score is great and the soundtrack choices continue to be dope. Each cliffhanger leaves you wishing you could just binge the whole season. Furthermore, the show never forgets the seemingly one-off moments that don’t get immediately revisited. The final episode not only revisits a moment that I almost forgot about but also ends on a perfect cliffhanger. Moreover, this season outshines the first with its complexity, humanity, and shock. Subsequently, each episode also tends to best the one that came before it. The best animated superhero show continues to in a huge way. The voice performances are elevated and with Robert Kirkman at the helm, the show’s direction remains unbeatable. You’re going to love it. Its rewatchability is high.
Elite Episodes
There’s always those episodes that make a great season even better. Now, normally I would pick three or four episodes out of the entire season. However, since we’re only talking about episodes 5 through 8, I’m only going to pick one.
Episode 5: This Must Come As A Shock – And shocking it is. This episode is the shift in the season. Mark has newfound responsibilities, orders from the Viltrum empire, and a girlfriend who hasn’t seen him in months. It’s not only an episode of mind-blowing reveals and discoveries that impact everything as we advance, but it’s also one of bone-breaking action. By the end of the episode, your mouth will be fully agape as the unexpected happens.
Final Thoughts
The initial thought that will permeate through the minds of us all is, season 3 can’t come soon enough. Also, after episode 8, it’s clear that season 3 is going to be more blood-soaked than ever. I can’t say too much more without spoiling, but we’ll talk more later.
Invincible Season 2 Part 2 premieres on March 14, 2024, with episodes airing weekly on Prime Video. Stay safe and wait for season 3.
