‘LOKI’ Episode 3 Review: Loki & Loki Go on an Apocalyptical Stroll

Episode three of Marvel’s Loki is a success in my book. If you have read my review of episode two, you’ll see that I felt that the show could have improved upon. I’m happy to say that episode three definitely got better and made me as excited as the first episode did. It was pure Loki content and having this more one-on-one focus throughout the episode made for not only a better story, but really showcased some great character development.

If you remember, Loki had followed Lady Loki (known as Sylvie) through a portal right before Mobius could stop him. Episode three focused purely on Loki and Sylvie’s interactions, which was great. Tom Hiddleston and Sophia Di Martino had a great tug and pull throughout the episode. It also begged the question – what makes a Loki a Loki? We see Di Martino’s version calling herself Sylvie and getting away from the persona of Loki. We learn more about her and how different it seems her version of this character is than Hiddleston’s Loki.

Character Growth for Loki

Speaking of Hiddleston’s Loki, I was happy to see that it was a return to a Loki I love. Not overly campy, though with some humorous parts. There was magic, emotion, character growth, and of course, some mischief. I thought it was really interesting finding out some of the things we did about Loki. Hearing how he felt about his mother and also what she taught him meant a lot to a long-time fan of Loki like myself. And also, I was impressed that Marvel decided to finally make it canon that Loki is [SPOILER] bisexual. It was a subtle reveal, but also incredibly bold – not burying it where it could be left open to interpretation. Loki is bisexual and with also the gender fluidity confirmation, it’s nice to see Loki finally get this development.

Is the TVA Good or Bad?

Overall, I loved the plot of this episode and what the objective was. This Loki v Loki (but also Loki needing to work with himself) was really enjoyable to watch. And you felt like there were real stakes at hand with what they had to contend with. On top of this, we get some really interesting background information on the TVA, which will definitely play into the overall story of the series in the coming episodes. The only thing we still don’t really know is why Sylvie has such a vendetta against the Time Keepers. Though, I’m starting to piece it together.

What I’m really enjoying about Loki is that it feels like a TV show. WandaVision and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier were both great shows. However, both felt like movies just broken up at certain points to make it a “TV show”. The Loki show has a beginning, middle, and end to its episodes. And this episode certainly ended on a cliffhanger that has been clamoring for more.

Rating: 4/5

I’m hoping we get more episodes like this one and get to see even more of Loki’s magical abilities, because it’s been too long since Marvel’s really done anything with Loki’s sorcery. So, here’s to more Loki and Sylvie and maybe, just maybe, bringing down the Time Keepers?
