‘Loki’ Episode 5 Review: A Journey of Self-Discovery

Let me start by saying I loved episode five of Disney Plus’s Loki. After five weeks of discovering the TVA and all of the oddities that arise from meeting different Loki variants, it feels like the show is on a journey of an epic season one conclusion. Although, the real theme of this episode (and perhaps the whole series) is Loki discovering how powerful he can really become.

Probably the Best Episode So Far

What can I say about episode five? I thought it was absolutely epic. Episode four ended with Loki being pruned and ending up in a desolate land with other versions of Loki. This episode explored different variations of the character we’ve known since the first Thor film and it was so cool. I loved seeing old Loki in a comic book classic outfit, kid Loki, and all the other different sorts of Lokis. Although they were all played by different actors, you could see the commonalities between them. And why our Tom Hiddleston Loki currently fights to be different.

It was incredibly important for Loki to discover all of these variations. We’ve seen Loki have an emotional story arc in the MCU, but we’ve never really seen his powers develop. I think that is what this show is for – for Loki to see who he can become. Who he is meant to become. I loved watching his growth even in one episode – and I especially loved Richard E. Grant’s version of this character.

Who is the TVA?

There’s lots of cool Easter eggs in this episode and the mystery of who is behind the TVA continues to grow. I think last episode we all kind of came to a conclusion of who was really behind the TVA, but I think episode five truly blew the lid off of that one. We’re left with even more answers and I think the show is setting up for an epic conclusion. The ending of this episode alone was awesome [frankly] and it reminds me why I fell in love with this character in the first place.

Rating: 4.5/5

If there’s one theme of this show that I’m bordering on disliking it is the not-so-subtle hints at some sort of romance between Loki and Sylvie. I’m just not sure how to feel about it. While the two actors have undeniable chemistry with each other, you keep remembering that they’re variations of each other. So…I mean, listen, it makes sense to a degree that Loki would be in love with themselves, but as the viewer…it’s a little questionable. Other than that, I loved this episode and oh man, I cannot wait to see the season one finale!
