New Resident Evil Film ‘Welcome to Raccoon City’ Is Inspired By John Carpenter

Resident Evil reboot is going back to it’s roots

In a recent interview at SXSW, director Johannes Roberts reveals the official title for the reboot. This new feature length film is titled Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. Reported on by IGN, Roberts discusses what his influences are for the film and what he envisions for the reboot, which will be completely unrelated from the previous franchised by the dastardly duo, director Paul W.S. Anderson and Resident Evil star Mila Jovovich. Here’s what Roberts had to say:

The big thing for this movie is tone. The thing I loved about the games is they were just scary as hell and that is very much what I wanted to, “says Roberts. “That atmosphere — it’s rain, it’s constantly dark, it’s creepy. Raccoon City is kind of this rotten character in the movie and that sort of atmosphere in the games I wanted to put in [the film].

He goes on to say his inspiration for the reboot were Assault on Precinct 13 and The Fog. Setting up the scene of Raccoon City is crucial to the movie because this will be based more on the games than the previous films – to really incorporate that panicked element and horror that they missed entirely in the beginning.

I’m a huge John Carpenter fan and I really took to that. The way he tells these claustrophobic siege movies and I took movies like Assault on Precinct 13 and The Fog and these disparate group of characters coming together under siege, and I took that as my filmic inspiration
