New Stream of Disney Release Changes | Black Widow, Luca, Free Guy, And More!

Black Widow

Disney recently dropped a BOMBSHELL shifting many of their biggest releases.

The long-overdue self-titled origin of Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow has been one of the many toss-ups in the midst of pandemic cinema. Questions have remained when and where Black Widow will officially release, most recently after CEO Bob Chapek announced during an interview with Bloomberg stating it would be a “last-minute decision.”

We finally have our confirmation as Disney has recently announced Black Widow will receive a hybrid-release, both in theaters and on Disney+ with Premiere Access. One caveat, however, while previously scheduled for release on May 7, it has now been pushed a bit over a month to June 9.  Arguably a film we should’ve received years ago considering the character played such a pivotal part in the Infinity Saga, we will FINALLY be able to get the story and answers we’ve been asking for!

Continuing Disney’s recent announcements, Cruella, starring Emma Stone, will now hit theaters and Disney+ Premiere Access simultaneously on May 28.

Luca

On top of that, Disney Pixar’s next film Luca will now release exclusively on Disney+ coming June 18.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

One of the biggest shifts in Disney’s release schedule is the delay of Marvels’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.  Which is now slated for September 3, previously scheduled to release July 9.

Updated Schedule for the MCU in 2021:

  • Black Widow – July 9
  • Shang-Chi – September 3
  • Eternals – November 5
  • Spider-Man: No Way Home – December 17

Other Changes

Free Guy, starring Ryan Reynolds, is to be released on August 13. Matthew Vaughn’s The King’s Man coming December 22. Adrian Lyne’s Deep Water pushed to January 14, 2022. Keneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile pushed to February 11, 2022.

Kareem Daniel, Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution chairman recently shared:

“Today’s announcement reflects our focus on providing consumer choice and serving the evolving preferences of audiences. By leveraging a flexible distribution strategy in a dynamic marketplace that is beginning to recover from the global pandemic, we will continue to employ the best options to deliver The Walt Disney Company’s unparalleled storytelling to fans and families around the world.”

Much of Disney’s updated release comes earned by the overwhelming success of their weekly Disney+ Exclusive MCU content. First with Wandavision, and most recently The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which brought Disney Plus’ most-watched series debut to date.  The future is streaming, and we’re only scratching the surface of what’s to come. What are YOUR thoughts on this latest news from Disney?
