Scott Derrickson’s sudden departure from the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t deterred his interest in potential superhero projects down the line. In an interview with ComicBook.com, discussing V/H/S/85, Derrickson explained that his initial attraction to directing Doctor Strange was the opportunity to craft a unique and engaging narrative. This creative vision remains his driving force for considering a return to the superhero genre.
Derrickson emphasized that what would draw him back to superhero projects is the chance to push the boundaries of the genre, aligning with the evolving preferences of modern audiences. He highlighted that in a lackluster summer box office, successful movies like Super Mario Bros., Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3, and Barbie stood out due to their distinctive and daring approaches.
The director clarified that his motivation for taking on Doctor Strange was not solely tied to it being a Marvel or comic book movie. Instead, it was deeply rooted in his admiration for the Doctor Strange comics and his conviction that he was the right director for the adaptation. He expressed interest in reentering the world of comic book cinema if presented with a project that represents a significant evolution of the genre. Derrickson stressed the need for innovative storytelling and a departure from conventional approaches to captivate both himself and modern audiences.
He conveyed his belief that audiences are ready for a new era of comic book cinema, advocating for audacious spinoffs and substantial genre evolution. Derrickson emphasized the importance of carefully selecting the right character and story to drive this evolution. He underscored the shift in audience preferences towards originality in event movies and urged studios to recognize this shift and avoid over-reliance on sequel-based franchise filmmaking.
Discussing his involvement in the V/H/S franchise, Derrickson highlighted the creative liberty these movies offer, showcasing a different facet of IP-driven filmmaking. He is a notable contributor to V/H/S/85, a sequel described as a surreal ’80s amalgamation featuring unsettling footage and nightmarish themes, scheduled to premiere on Shudder on October 6th.
