Nerds everywhere have begun to celebrate as one of pop culture’s most respected actors is making his return to the Star Trek franchise: Sir Patrick Stewart has officially announced his role in an upcoming Star Trek television series as Jean-Luc Picard during this year’s Star Trek Las Vegas convention.
Few details have been released about the new star trek series or Picard’s role within it – indeed, there is speculation as to whether or not Picard will even don the title of Captain – but Stewart did indicate that this show will continue the plot after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis which wrapped up filming in 2002.
Stewart says that the new series will “…be something very different, but it will come to you with the same passion” and that “[Picard] may be someone who has been changed by his experiences.”
The as-of-yet unnamed show already boasts a healthy cadre of producers and writers, including Star Trek veterans such as Alex Kurtzman, James Duff, and Akiva Goldman, all producers and/or co-creators of Star Trek: Discovery.
Other writers include Kirsten Beyer, writer for Discovery as well as holding the rank of coordinator between the Discovery TV show and it’s many novels and comic books. Her role in the new series may in part be to coordinate between Discovery and what appears to be an new and ever-expanding Star Trek universe.
The last name on the list is Michael Chabon, the multi-award winning author and Pulitzer Prize holder, who has previously stated that he will write for the upcoming Star Trek: Short Treks which serve as a lead-on to Discovery’s second season.
Fans across the internet have reacted with a great deal of joy and no small amount of excitement at the return of Stewart and Picard and will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on the upcoming months as information on the new series is released.
