Squid Game (NETFLIX): One of the Best Shows of 2021

There are so many TV shows that are just okay. Sure, they satisfy that itch for binge-worthy content and kill a few hours of boredom. Other than that, they’re easily forgotten and you’re searching for the next thing to sink your teeth in. This is not the case with Netflix’s Squid Game. This is a masterfully done show that is sure to stay with many even after they’re finished all nine episodes. I know I will be thinking about this for some time.

What It’s About

Squid Game is a brutal South Korean show that pins people against each other – all for the sake of money. The premise is this: a bunch of people with financial problems is roped into playing games and whoever wins at the end, wins the massive monetary prize. However, what the players don’t initially know is that if you lose a game, it’s not like you just step to the sidelines and watch the other players compete. You die. It’s a bloody, survival strategy show that is full of heartbreak, epic aesthetics, and compelling storylines.

The Netflix show stars Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Jung Ho-yeon, Oh Yeong-su, Heo Sung-tae, Wi Ha-joon, and Anupam Tripathi. Each character in this series is compelling and captivating. While the show is superior to so many in the way it artfully showcases scenery and the way it handles its bloody moments, the true beauty of this story is the characters. Specifically, the actors who play them. Each bringing multiple layers to who they’re playing – making sure that you develop an attachment to each of them.

It seems that everyone is talking about Squid Game, as well they should. I don’t think I’ve seen a show that is so stylish and interesting in a long time. While there are other shows and movies that have had a theme of competitors killing each other until there’s a single person standing (Battle Royal, Hunger Games, etc.), I think Squid Games really shows how you can use this same concept and make it entirely your own. Visually, it’s stunning. And not only does it keep you guessing, the twists and turns don’t feel cheap. It’s more than just a fight to the death – there are some really emotional and heartbreaking scenes in this show.

Rating: 5/5

Hwang Dong-hyuk is the creator, writer, and director of Squid Game. While the show is immensely popular, he does state there’s no plans for a second season. Truthfully, I can understand why – a lot of great concepts get muddied when there’s a second season. However, I can’t help, but want another season – it’s just so good.

Make sure you give Squid Game a try – you won’t regret it!
