There seems to be no limit to the number of new Star Wars series coming from Marvel Comics. With so many events uncovered on screen during the height of the Republic, it’s a real gold mine for developing new material. The Age of Republic miniseries aims to span three eras of the Star Wars timeline beginning with the prequel era. In Special #1, there are three different stories told during that time.
The Weapon
With the focus on Mace Windu and his capture on Oosalon in the Outer Rim by terrorists. With a broken lightsaber and seemingly no way out, we get flashbacks to his time as a Padawan where he learned to construct his lightsaber. Using this tutelage, he reassembles his currently broken weapon and fights his way out. With impressive art by Paolo Villanelli and dialogue from Ethan Sacks, the conclusion gives us impressive action and more than one familiar face.
Sisters
For any fans of The Clones Wars animated series, you know that more Asajj Ventress is never a bad thing. Jody Houser writes a story about Asajj seeking to collect on a bounty in
Coruscant. While there she remembers her time with the Nightsisters and what it was like to lose them to General Grevious. This makes her decide to help those in need and do the right thing making her the grey character she has always been. Truly one of the most underrated in the expanded Star Wars universe, Asajj continues to be beloved.
501 Plus One
I’ll get it out of the way early and tell you that Jar Jar Binks is in this short. However, everyone’s favorite clone trooper Captain Rex is the focus of this one penned by Marc Guggenheim of Arrow and X-Men fame. Though he tries to show Binks in the senator role, he’s still just there for comic relief and it’s still a question of if anyone is laughing. Though we get to see flashback to Rex’s time in numerous battles, it’s still a forgettable one-off that doesn’t add much to the spectacular art by Caspar Wijngaard.
Age of Republic Special #1 was released on January 16, 2019 by Marvel Comics.
