A man in a superhero costume sits at a large desk with feet up, in an office with American flags, family photos, and curtains framing a window behind him.

We are literally one episode away from the series finale of The Boys. Where the last couple of episodes didn’t feel like they belonged in the last season of a show, episode seven did. We do truly feel like we are in the endgame, even if there is a lot left unsaid. This episode was titled “The Frenchman, the Female, and the Man Called Mother’s Milk”, so we already assumed something sad was going to happen, but it didn’t stop it from hurting.

Let’s first start by saying that while we’re glad that Soldier Boy is still disgusted with Homelander, the decision for him to give his son V1 due to loving the same woman is still weak as hell. And then Homelander has essentially put his father “back on ice”, so what now? Is Soldier Boy going to be unfrozen again in the last episode? If so, will he actually be a help to the Boys or a detriment? Or will he stay on ice?

While Soldier Boy’s potential flip feels believable, we’re not buying Sister Sage’s sudden 180. This woman has been jaded, slightly crazy, and an architect in Homelander’s madness since she was introduced – this is the same woman who literally wanted everyone dead. We’re supposed to believe suddenly that she’s helping the Boys? For what? Love? It’s a little weak to have both Soldier Boy and Sister Sage act out of character for love.

    MAJOR SPOILERS

You know who didn’t act out of character? Frenchie and Kimiko. These two have been the strongest couple even before they were an official couple. It was very obvious from the proclamations of love and the focus on “I can’t live without Kimiko” that something was going to happen to Frenchie. And when it did happen, I cried. Hard. The show did a fantastic job in giving one of the original characters a beautiful, bittersweet sendoff. For a moment, we imagined these two having a good life together, but then remembered they were tragic figures always destined for sadness. Still, Frenchie’s final act was a wonderful declaration of his love for Kimiko and the acting was perfectly done.

We had some emotional beats between Billy and Hughie, as well as a pep talk from Mother’s Milk to remind Starlight not to get jaded. It was a little surprising honestly, based on the episode’s title; that no one else perished, but based on the show’s willingness to kill off Frenchie, we’re assuming we’re going to see more deaths to come in the finale. We just have to wonder, what is Soldier Boy’s role in this? Will Billy actually get his shot at Homelander? Where the hell is Ryan? And will Ashley finally be free?

Oh and two Gen V characters showed up for two seconds as an afterthought. Even The Boys forgot they existed, so it is no wonder their show was cancelled. Seriously, if Marie and Jordan are the reason for Homelander’s demise and not the characters we’ve seen tirelessly go at it for five seasons, I’m going to be pissed.

What’d you think of episode seven of The Boys season five?
