The Cast of The Stand Talk About Similarities Between Show and 2020

CBS All Access’s The Stand comes out soon. Stephen King wrote his best-selling novel in 1978, yet it has a lot of similarities to what the world has gone through in 2020.

EW did a feature on the cast of The Stand, who admit that they even were spooked by the similarities between the show and real life.

Nat Wolff, who plays the henchman Lloyd Henreid; revealed:

“I got spooked. Suddenly everybody was saying, ‘Oh, [COVID -19] is just like the flu’ [like in the show], and I’m reading about prisoners in Italy lighting toilet paper on fire to get attention – I had just shot a scene where I was doing that. I went into panic mode.”

Showrunner Benjamin Cavell emphasizes that the show isn’t just about a pandemic. Even though there is a killer virus in the show – called Captain Tripps. Which, wipes out 99.4 perfect of the world’s population. This, however; is just part of the story. Cavell explains:

“Captain Tripps is the mechanism by which the world gets emptied out so that King can do his Lord of the Rings in the United States and set up a walk to Mordor.”

At the center of everything is King’s most formidable villain – Randall Flagg, played by Alexander Skarsgård. Fiona Dourif, who plays Rat Woman, describes him as: “He’s sort of sexy Trump.”

Katherine McNamara, who plays Julie Lawry, also opened up about the show:

“It’s a bit terrifying when you’re with hundreds of extras chanting insane profanities at Alexander Skarsgard lording over us as Randall Flagg”

Cavell added:

“We fell in love with the idea that Flagg would want to essentially block out any logos – and Vegas is obviously a place with a lot of logos – but that he would want to block out any branding that’s not him with a Flagg symbol.”

Skarsgard himself spoke of Randall Flagg:

“Flagg’s such a formidable opponent, I decided to focus on his vulnerability. He needs adulation and accolades from his sycophants, and that fuels his ego. That’s interesting because he shouldn’t care about tiny humans at all but still craves their devotion.”

The Stand will premiere on CBS All Access on December 17th. Who else is ready?
