The Return of Eddie Murphy

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”27068″ img_size=”950×460″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]Every so often I get into those, “Who is your favorite comedian?” conversations and my response tends to vary and I can never pick just one. While it varies, it usually rounds out to, Dave Chappelle, Hannibal Burress, Sarah Silverman, and Eddie Murphy. Which then leads to the convo of, “Damn, where has Eddie been, he hasn’t done anything in a while?” it’s a great question. One that he doesn’t have to answer but did. In the first episode of the newest season of the Netflix series, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee the legendary funnyman implied that he’s been doing nothing but his fatherly duties. He made so much classic material, standups as well as movies that he hasn’t had to do much in the past decade. Additionally, Mr. Murphy discussed the regret of walking away from stand-up and that he had interests in taking another swing at it.

Recently, however, his name has been spotted in various articles, including our own referencing, Coming 2 America a sequel to his 80s classic. Along with the Netflix biopic, Dolemite Is My Name one could say Eddie is headed back to the top. Furthermore, according to Vanity Fair, his comments about taking the comedic stage again has turned into big money negotiations with Netflix. The results of which may lead to a possible $70 million comedy special deal. It’s not clear just yet as to how many specials the deal would intel but I know I’m ready and waiting.

Meanwhile, Dolemite Is My Name the biopic Directed by Craig Brewer is about comedian Rudy Ray Moore. Moore became popular in the 60s not only for his raunchy stand-up but also for the character he created, Dolemite. The alter ego became bigger than life resulting in Moore releasing a film named after the character in 1975 along with two sequels. The film written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski will star Eddie Murphy as well as many other stars. Those stars include Chris Rock, Wesley Snipes, Craig Robinson, Mike Epps, Titus Burgess, just to name a few. The film will premier during the Toronto International Film Festival in September. The Netflix release will be October 25th.

The legend has returned and I am delighted. He’s booked and busy as he ascends to reclaim his comedic crown. Did you miss Eddie? Who’s your favorite Murphy character? Let us know.
