Three in 10 adults would watch Christmas films all year round if they could, while almost half can recite lines from their favorite holiday movies word for word. But what is it that keeps us coming back for the same moments every year?

Rant Casino collaborated with clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist Amber Johnston from Healthy Mind Psychology to uncover the magic of Christmas nostalgia. Together, we explore why these films captivate us and reveal the most cherished Christmas movie moments that bring joy year after year.

    Key Findings ❄️

    • Christmas nostalgia stimulates reward pathways in our brains, activating the hippocampus through a chord, memorable line, or certain sound.
    • Home Alone’s booby traps scene is the most nostalgic Christmas moment, while The Grinch dominates with four entries in the top 10.
    • The 50 most popular Christmas movie scenes have amassed nearly half a billion views in total.

    The Psychology Behind Christmas Nostalgia

Amber Johnston explains, “The interesting neurophysiology behind nostalgia triggers positive experiences when rewatching old movies during the holidays. It could be something small, like a sound, a line, or a visual cue, which activates the hippocampus—our memory store. The hippocampus is closely linked to our emotional system.”

“This process creates emotions tied to specific memories, releasing feel-good chemicals like serotonin and dopamine. Rewatching these films, reenacting traditions, or recounting stories also releases oxytocin, fostering social bonding and connection. These triggers make us feel cosy, warm, and safe, decreasing cortisol levels and promoting mental well-being.”

“This is why we continually seek out these nostalgic moments as part of our festive traditions,” Johnston concludes.

    Methodology

Rant Casino analyzed over 150 festive film moments sourced from platforms like Listverse, IMDB, and POPSUGAR. The highest-viewed scene on YouTube for each moment was recorded, and the list was ranked from highest to lowest views. To emphasize nostalgia, films released in the last five years and unrelated songs were excluded from the final rankings.
