There’s been plenty of police procedural crime dramas throughout the years. Shows like Law & Order: SVU has had such a long shelf-life that it’s become essentially part of our pop culture. There’s plenty of shows that are still popular to this day – such as Chicago PD, Blue Bloods, and more. Among the sea of police procedural crime dramas is one that probably gets forgotten about, but was one of my favorites once upon a time. To me, it was as enjoyable as Special Victims Unit and Criminal Minds.
Remember Cold Case?
This show was CBS’s Cold Case. The procedural crime drama ran for seven seasons between 2003 and 2010. The show starred Kathyrn Morris, Justin Chambers, Danny Pino, John Finn, Jeremy Ratchford, Thom Barry, and Tracie Thoms. Cold Case had a unique spin to its formula, which you could probably guess by its name. Instead of tackling current crimes, the show solved old ones. Whether the case had been cold five years or fifty years, the cops on the show would dive into these crimes and it was always extremely satisfying when they solved them.
The Premise Of The Show
For years I’d sit with my parents and watch Cold Case as it premiered a new episode every week. I just loved Morris as Lilly Rush and looked forward to the intro every episode. I believed that the team had a really great chemistry with each other and the idea that we’d get to go back in time every week was one that was so interesting to me. It was like Law & Order, but sometimes we’d literally be solving a case from the 40s. Some episodes, there were people still alive for the team to talk to, but in other cases, there was no one for them to trace back to – making solving these cold cases even more difficult.
Cold Case Was a Breath of Fresh Air
Cold Case approached really serious topics and tackled things such as racism, sexism, homophobia, and more. While many cases were fictional, there were some that were clearly inspired by real-life cases. It’s difficult at times to describe what I necessarily loved about this show, it was just a feeling living in it that made it stand out to me, even as I was thirteen years old watching it. I just loved the way the squad handled the cases and the serious and sensitive issues of each cold case. I think it was just nice having a show that decided to do something different and look to bring closure to these unsolved mysteries, as there’s so many cold cases now and those victims deserve justice as well. We could at least live vicariously through Cold Case in this retrospect.
Left on a Cliffhanger
Cold Case was unfortunately canceled after seven seasons. And since it was customary for the show to end every season on a cliffhanger, the series was left off with a lot of unanswered questions. I remember being so disappointed with the news of its cancellation and while seven seasons are more than a lot of network shows get, I still felt that Cold Case deserved more seasons and to be remembered when people talk about great procedural crime dramas. To me, it was just as good as SVU and Criminal Minds.
