Transformers: War for Cybertron (2010) and Transformers: Fall of Cybertron (2012) are Transformers games released during the PS3/XBox 360 era of gaming. Fans fondly remember them for their impressive graphics, epic gameplay, and memorable story. Both games are cemented in history as how to do a Transformers game and since then, fans of the franchise have wanted more.
A Good Transformers Game?
Transformers: Earthspark – Expedition…is not that. If you were looking to scratch that itch you’ve had for another epic Transformers video game, Expedition is not the game to look to. Expedition is an open-world Transformers game based on the Nickelodeon-Paramount Plus cartoon Transformers: Earthspark and you play as Bumblebee. Considering Earthspark is already a kid cartoon, it should be no surprise that a game based on the show would be more kid-centric.
The Good Stuff
That is not to say that Expedition isn’t a fun game. With bright graphics and a cool art style, the Earthspark-based game is straight to the point and easy to play. Seemingly taking place after the end of season one, the story is easy to follow, and interesting for those who enjoy the show. After a quick tutorial, you are in full control of Bumblebee as you drive around, collect cards, beat up bad guys, and interact with all the main characters from the cartoon.
The controls on Expedition are easy and the driving, which is essentially the main component of the game; is fun. We played Expedition on a Playstation 4 and while it’s not the latest video game console, the graphics are still great. The fighting is traditional arcade-style, which is just fine. You can kick, punch, jump, and blast away enemies. And there’s combos! It’s fun.
While the game is “open-world”, don’t expect anything akin to Elden Ring or Red Dead Redemption 2. There is not a lot to do in the world other than go from objective to objective, but there’s enough in it that it’ll take a fair amount of time to complete if you complete everything.
Some Criticism
From a gameplay standpoint, Transformers: Earthspark – Expedition is a fun game that doesn’t feel buggy and it’s great for kids. However, there is some criticism to be had. While every character looks just as they do in the show, it’s clear that the voice actors are not the same as in the show. The voice acting is…not great. At all. And it’s a shame because the story is pretty decent, but the voice acting takes you out of the game from time to time.
Is Transformers: Earthspark – Expedition just a cash grab? Probably. Most likely. Yes. Let’s remember, this is Hasbro. The Transformers cartoon was originally made to sell the toys they had created. So, yea, it’s pretty much a full cycle. Make the cartoon, sell the toys centered around the cartoon, and then sell the video game centered around the cartoon and toys. This game isn’t made with the same love or uniqueness that War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron were made with. And, it is too bad, because if it was done properly, a true open-world Transformers game set on Cybertron would sell like hotcakes. But, Expedition is still fun and if you like Earthspark, it’s a good way to pass the time while we wait for season two.
Speaking of Earthspark, I reviewed the cartoon when season one ended, and while also child-centered, it’s a fun watch for Transformers fans.
Did you get a hold of Transformers: Earthspark – Expedition? If so, what do you think of it? Let us know!
"Transformers: Earthspark - Expedition" stands apart from its predecessors, "War for Cybertron" and "Fall of Cybertron," targeting a younger gaming audience. Set in the open-world inspired by the "Transformers: Earthspark" cartoon, the game follows Bumblebee through vibrant graphics and accessible gameplay. While lacking the complexity of top-tier open-world titles, the driving and combat mechanics are enjoyable. However, the game falls short in voice acting quality, aligning more with a commercial tie-in to the Earthspark franchise. Despite this, it offers a fun experience for fans, filling the gap while awaiting the next season. A solid choice for young Transformers enthusiasts.
