When Solo: A Star Wars Story struggled at the box office, Disney CEO Bob Iger took notice. He suggested that perhaps a slow down with Star Wars films was in the offing. This was after a rapid succession of films starting with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, in 2015. The spinoff/prequel Rogue One: A Star Wars Story soon followed. Then came Rian Johnson’s Force Awakens sequel The Last Jedi and the aforementioned Solo.
Now with JJ Abrams Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker closer to its December premier, Iger once again is hinting at a slow down in the theatrical Star Wars Universe. He reiterated this while promoting his recently release memoir: Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons Learned from 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney. This was during a BBC interview:
I have said publicly that I think we made and released too many Star Wars films over a short period of time. I have not said that they were disappointing in any way. I’ve not said that I’m disappointed in their performance. I just think that there’s something so special about a Star Wars film, and less is more.
That of course doesn’t mean the Star Wars Universe isn’t moving onto other venues. Disney+ is bringing along with it Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian which already has been renewed for a second season. Rian Johnson is also still working on a future Star Wars project. So it appears the cupboard isn’t bare, it is just being rationed.
Do you agree with Bob Iger that indeed “Less is More” or do feel the more Star Wars, the better? Share your thoughts with us at GeekVibesNation.
