The Star Trek Universe is thriving on the television screen. Between Star Trek Discovery, Star Trek Picard, as well as the upcoming Strange New Worlds, the appetite for more Star Trek seems high. Unfortunately, the cinematic side of the equation is not as positive.
Beyond Star Trek Beyond
The last Star Trek film was Star Trek Beyond. And while there were original plans for a follow up to the film, those plans fell by the wayside. This coincided when contract negotiations with the Chrises hit a snag. First, Paramount could not work out a deal with Star Chris Pine who plays Captain Kirk. Then they could not reach a deal with Chris Hemsworth who was slated to reprise his role as Captain Kirk’s father George. When that happened, the film just evaporated as the studio appeared to lose interest as well.
Would Television work better
Simon Pegg who played Montgomery Scott, had hoped that things would be worked out. But when that didn’t seem to be on the horizon, he also pondered if perhaps television might be a better avenue for their version of Star Trek, called the Kelvin Timeline. Recently, Comicbook.com talked to Zachary Quinto, who played Mr. Spock. He was asked if he agreed with Pegg’s assessment.
It’s already thriving in the television format with Discovery and Picard and the spinoffs. I can’t even keep track of how many new Star Trek stories are being told since our last film in 2016. All I know is that we, all of us, had an incredible experience making those films. If there is an appetite for more of those stories with us in them, I’m sure that we would all be thrilled to come back and do one more or whatever, but I’m not really attached to it anymore.
That’s probably because he’s busy with the second season of NOS4A2. Life goes on after all. Would you like to see a return to the Kelvin time line of Star Trek? Would the loss of Chris Pine as Captain Kirk be a deal breaker? Share what you expect from your Star Trek with us at Geek Vibes Nation.
