Bitcoin and Ethereum may be the two main protagonists of the crypto market, and the first coins to focus on when learning how to buy cryptocurrency, given their value, market capitalization, and the influence they have in the industry, but that doesn’t mean they’re the only coins worth adding to your investment portfolio. In fact, putting all your hopes (and money) on just these two assets is precisely what you shouldn’t do because that would increase your risk of losses considerably. Far too many inexperienced individuals make the mistake of becoming dependent on the performance of a limited set of investments and come to regret it later, when these products underperform or the market goes through a downturn.
The smarter and safer route, which all crypto investors should follow, is building a diversified portfolio that contains a good mix of assets with different characteristics and risk profiles. But which coins should you add to your crypto stash, aside from BTC and ETH? Well, if you haven’t already considered it, you might want to give BNB a thought.
It might not be immediately obvious why BNB would make a good addition to your portfolio. You can check the BNB price and look into the coin’s recent performance, but that won’t tell you everything you need to know about this crypto’s investment potential. So, a closer inspection is necessary to understand how BNB could benefit your holdings over the long term.
Utility-driven value
Certain crypto assets, like meme coins, but not only them, are driven entirely by hype and market sentiment, which means their value is built artificially and can dwindle in an instant, causing massive losses to holders. They are perfect for speculation, but less so for long-term investing. Other types of crypto are valuable because they are actually useful and can serve different functions in different contexts.
BNB is part of the latter category. Launched in 2017 through an Initial Coin Offering (or ICO), BNB is the native token of the BNB Chain, and was created with a specific purpose, that of supporting various activities in the Binance ecosystem, such as paying for gas fees on the BNB Chain, paying lower fees on the Binance exchange, participating in token sales, accessing and using the platform’s resources, etc.
The multiple roles that BNB plays in this thriving network ensure there is constant demand for the asset. That contributes to greater price stability in the long run and a stronger potential for appreciation.
Backing from Binance
Binance is arguably the largest and most prestigious crypto exchange in existence. We’re talking about a platform with a global presence that has been operating successfully in the crypto space for many years, delivering its services to a growing user base.
By the latest count, Binance serves over 300 million registered users from all parts of the world, and the number of monthly active users (MAUs) surpassed the 100 million threshold during the peak trading months in 2025. On average, the platform sees over 150,000 new registrations every day. This means that millions of people flock to Binance daily to use its products and services.
The fact that BNB is tied to such a powerful player in the crypto market and enjoys the support of a large community only adds to its strength and legitimacy, and makes it a more reliable choice compared to smaller crypto projects that don’t have a strong infrastructure to uphold them.
Strong performance
Another incentive for using BNB is the efficiency of its blockchain. The BNB Chain is highly performant, as it uses Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA) Consensus, an advanced hybrid consensus model that accelerates block creation, and it is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), which allows developers to seamlessly migrate Ethereum-based dApps. Furthermore, the system undergoes continuous upgrades to improve key areas like speed and scalability, and enhance its overall functionality.
These innovative technical features enable the BNB Chain to ensure fast transactions and keep fees low, making it ideal for a variety of applications in sectors like gaming or decentralized finance (DeFi). This attracts a large number of users to the network, ensuring its continuous growth and, implicitly, the potential growth of its native token.
A strategic deflationary mechanism
Some cryptocurrencies, like Dogecoin (DOGE), don’t have an upper cap on the number of coins that can be created, which allows for continuous issuance that can lead to inflationary pressure over time.
BNB, on the other hand, has a total supply capped at 200 million tokens, all of which have already been minted the moment the project launched. Apart from that, the blockchain also employs a deflationary mechanism that gradually diminishes the number of coins in existence through a systematic burning process. Basically, a predetermined quantity of tokens is automatically sent to a burn address and permanently removed from circulation. The end goal is to bring the total supply from 200 to 100 million tokens and create scarcity to help BNB build and maintain long-term value.
Enhanced security
Security should always be a priority when engaging with crypto assets. In BNB’s case, the coin has the advantage of being built on a sturdy foundation, as the BNB Chain is one of the most robust blockchains in the market in terms of security. After the Binance Smart Chain (BSC) was hacked in 2022, the platform implemented stringent security measures to make sure these types of issues won’t happen again in the future. On top of that, the BNB Chain prioritizes regular audits and constant monitoring of its system to prevent potential attacks.
Wrapping up
As you can see, BNB boasts many features and qualities that make it stand out from many of its peers and position it as a strong contender for portfolio diversification. However, you need to take your own investment goals and needs into consideration before deciding whether BNB deserves a place in your holdings or not, so do your due diligence and act accordingly.
