Elizabeth Olsen, known for her portrayal of Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has shed light on a long-standing question regarding the character’s trajectory in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Fans were left perplexed by the quick transition from Wanda’s redemptive arc in the Disney+ series WandaVision to her villainous turn in the Doctor Strange sequel. Olsen’s recent comments have confirmed suspicions that the writers of Doctor Strange 2 had not seen WandaVision before crafting the script.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Olsen revealed that she approached the Doctor Strange 2 writers with a question: “Do you know what we’re doing in WandaVision?” Their response was a resounding “No.” The reason behind this was that WandaVision had not been completed at the time of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’s writing process.
Olsen recognized the similarity of themes between the two projects, acknowledging that parallel stories of dealing with grief and loss could be told. She shared her proposal with the writers, highlighting the importance of understanding Wanda’s journey in WandaVision. However, due to their lack of exposure to the Disney+ series, Olsen had to find a fresh perspective and “attack the same themes” from a different angle to avoid repetition.

This revelation aligns with criticisms voiced by some detractors of Doctor Strange 2, who felt that Wanda’s rapid descent into villainy following her redemption arc in WandaVision was unjustified and rushed. The abruptness of her shift left many wondering if the writers had taken her character development into account.
Writer Michael Waldron previously addressed the accelerated transformation, attributing it to Wanda’s possession of the Darkhold, a book of dark magic featured in WandaVision. He explained that the Darkhold influenced Wanda, preying on her anger and trauma, ultimately pushing her to her breaking point. Additionally, Waldron pointed out that Wanda questions the double standards applied to heroes who break the rules, emphasizing her frustration with being labeled a villain for similar actions.
While the revelation that the Doctor Strange 2 writers hadn’t seen WandaVision may disappoint fans who anticipated a seamless continuation of Wanda’s character development, it provides context for the unexpected shift in her portrayal.
