To this day DC’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice might be the most controversial DCEU film. There is a strong side that loves the movie, especially the Ultimate Edition, and there is a side that hates is. It sits at 29% on Rotten Tomatoes with critics and 63% Audience Score. It grossed over $872 million and many said the film was a failure because a film with Superman and Batman failed tor each a billion dollars. Some of the biggest gripes about the film was the “Martha” scene, pacing, and Jesse Eisenberg as Lex. Five years later and people are still throwing the Martha line up in fans faces.
But since the film has been released back in 2016, it has achieved a cult like status. It is still one of the most talked about movies on Twitter and you will find the #BVS or #BatmanVSuperman trending constantly. Warner Bros. just dropped a remaster of the film in 4K. While the film seems to be getting some love today, that was not always the case says Zack Snyder. Apparently the execs at WB hated the movie so much that they wanted Zack Snyder to distance from the movie in Justice League. Zack of course told the studio no
“I feel like the studio had this hatred for Batman v Superman. There was this pressure on me to divorce the movie from Batman v Superman, which I didn’t want to do, and which I didn’t do. Frankly, it’s a trilogy of movies, so it continues the story. The narrative is affected by the things that have gone before it and that way it’s able to realize this world that sets up the Darkseid invasion, for what was planned to be a five-movie arc. It definitely finishes with this version of the film, with our heroes having mended their personal wounds and joined together as a family.”
Batman v Superman seems to be the film that soured WB on Zack Snyder. Zack even said that after BVS the studio sent Geoff Johns to baby sit the production on Justice League. Zack left production after the unfortunate passing of his daughter and the film was handed over to Whedon who shot a Justice League film the studio wanted and not Zack’s vision. Luckily Zack was able to release his vision for the world to see.
Zack says he has no interest in doing another comic film right now and Ann Sarnoff with WarnerMedia has made it clear they are moving on from Zack. Honestly if I were Zack I am not sure I would want to work with WB again for some time. Netflix might be his new home especially if Army of the Dead does huge numbers for the streaming service. And who knows, maybe Kevin Feige with Marvel might come calling.
